OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD – SHOEBOX PARTY
The start of Term 3 saw the launch of the Operation Christmas Child 2018 project at Emmanuel.
After an introductory assembly, including a visit from Mrs Elisabeth Stokes (Samaritan’s Purse), we set the goal of filling as many shoe-boxes as possible to send overseas to children around the world. Two buckets were placed in each classroom and the collecting of donations began.
People from the local community were invited to join us in collecting items with which we could fill shoe-boxes. Thank you to the ‘Craft Group and friends’ from Girrawheen Baptist Church, who partnered with us in this project.
The Year 2 students wrote persuasive letters to a number of local shops, attempting to ‘persuade’ them to help us reach our goal by donating items we could put in the shoe-boxes. It is with thankful hearts and much excitement that we can report that there a number of stores who answered our letters and were ‘persuaded’ to generously donate either gift cards or items for our shoe-boxes. These stores include:
- Big W, Whitfords
- K-Mart, Warwick
- K-Mart, Joondalup
- Coles, Alexander Heights
- Target, Innaloo
In response to a letter written by four students from Year 2A, Dawn Martin (store manager at Big W, Whitfords) requested that the boys visit her store to collect two boxes filled with donated items. This made for a quick, exciting excursion to the shops! The boys even received a short tour of the back of the store, where all the deliveries are made and processed.
Throughout the term, there were also fundraising events to help raise money to cover the cost of shipping the shoe-boxes overseas. These events were:
- Crazy Hair Day
- Sausage Sizzle Lunch
- Free Dress Day
Thank you to all who participated in these events. In total, we were able to raise $2186.3.
On the final day of term, we hosted our Shoe-box Packing Party. The day included packing shoe-boxes, eating sausage sizzles and freddos, writing letters to send in our shoe-boxes, and praying for the children who will receive the shoe-boxes.
It was a mammoth team effort by all and we were ecstatic when we counted our shoe-boxes to discover that we had been able to fill 196 shoe-boxes!
A huge THANK YOU to all those who helped us in any way! We could not have done it without you
